Marvel & DC

Hey everybody,

It's vacation time, which means I have a little bit of spare time. So I decided to use this spare time to
clear a view things up for you. There are so many different superhero movies and TV series that it's easy to understand why people could get confused. Someone asked me a few weeks ago if there was any chance we would see Batman fight Iron Man. Hearing that and knowing the complexibility of all these different superhero universes, I decided it was time for a blog.

In the world of comic books there are two major publishers: Marvel comics and DC comics. They both have been here for a very long time now. Marvel comics was founded in 1939 and DC comics in 1934. There has been a battle between them for over 70 years and they often inspire and steel from eachother. Together they have created a ton of superheroes and only a handful are known to most people today. But how do you know who belongs to who? Well that's why I'm here.

DC
Famous superheroes
DC hasn't created as much superheroes as Marvel, but it has created the more famous superheroes. DC
is the founder of the Justice League and its members: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg. It's also founder of the Suicide Squad and it's members from which Harley Quinn and Deadshot are the most famous. Another great point for DC is earned because they created the most iconic comicbook villain: the Joker. Furthermore you may also know these DC heroes/villains: Green Arrow, Black Canary, Firestorm, Vixen, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and the superhero team the Watchmen.

DC Extended Universe (DCEU)
Batman and Superman have had several movies and incarnations in the past 40 years., but until March 2016 they had never shared the big screen. After the ending of the succesful Dark Knight triology (2005-2012) directed by Christopher Nolan, DC decided to bring back the Man of Steel after a failed attempt with 2006's Superman Returns. Man of Steel (2013) brought a darker version of Superman and started the DC Extended Universe. The DCEU is DC's attempt to create the same shared movie universe Marvel has already created. It now features three movies: Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Suicide Squad (2016).

DC TV universe
The DCEU has had a rough start, but the DC television universe is already doing pretty great. It started in 2012 with Arrow. This show introduced us to Barry Allen and several members of the Legends of Tomorrow who later starred in the Flash (2014) and Legends of Tomorrow (2016) respectivitly. Along with Supergirl (2016) they make the DC TV universe.
Note: the TV serie Gotham (2015) isn't part of the DC TV universe. The writers of Arrow already confirmed that their will be no chance Batman will appear on Arrow. The TV serie Constantine (2014) however is set in the same universe as Arrow and he even made a guest appearance on the show.

DC animation
DC has one animated TV serie: Vixen (2015). The first season contains six short episodes and a second season will soon be released. The serie follows Mari McCabe or better known as the superhero Vixen. It is set in the same universe as Arrow, The Flash. Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.
Note: Vixen will also appear in the second season of Legends of Tomorrow, but this will be a different incarnation of the character: Amaya Jiwe.

-> Before I switch to Marvel there are a few things I have to explain first. The DC TV universe and the DCEU are two different universes. This means there will be two different versions of the Flash and Superman since a different Superman has already been cast for the second season of Supergirl and we've already seen Ezra Miller's Flash in the DCEU. I'm not entirely against this, but I know this can create a lot of confusion for people who aren't familair with all the movies or TV series.

MARVEL
Famous superheroes
They may haven't created the more famous superheroes, but they have created the most of them. The list of Marvel heroes is long and here are a few of Marvel's superhero teams and it's members:
- the Avengers; Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Falcon, Vision and Scarlet Witch.
- X-Men; Wolverine, Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Mystique, Beast, Storm and Rogue
- Guardians of the Galaxy; Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon and Groot
- Fantastic Four; Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Thing and Human Torch
- Defenders; Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage

I probably could go on for another hour and then I would've only scratched the surface. There are so many left: Spider-Man, Black Panther, Ant-Man, the Winter Soldier and Nick Fury are just a few of the names I hadn't mentioned yet. Then I haven't even started with the villains yet: Loki, Ultron, Thanos, Magneto, Mystique and many more. I think we all can see know why Marvel has received the nickname The House of Ideas.

Marvel Cinematic Universe
Marvel studios has proven with it's Cinematic Universe that almost everything they touch will turn into gold. Their universe contains 13 movies and started in 2008 with Iron Man. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the highest-grossing franchise ever and has earned over 10 billion dollars today. The MCU is divided into three phases. Phase One includes Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011), Captain America: the First Avenger (2011) and  ends with The Avengers (2012). Phase Two includes Iron Man 3 (2013), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Captain America: the Winter Soldier (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and Ant-Man (2015). Captain America: Civil War (2016) is the first film from the franchise's Phase Three.

Marvel TV series
Marvel has several running TV series and more in development. In 2013 they released Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and in 2015 Agent Carter. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is still running but Agent Carter has unfortunately been canceled after two seasons. Marvel also succesfully collaborates with Netflix in creating several web TV series: Daredevil (2015) and Jessica Jones (2015). Later this year and next year we will also receive the web TV series Luke Cage (2016), The Defenders (2017) and Iron Fist (2017).

Marvel animation
Marvel animation studios produces three animated TV series who are still running: Ultimate Spider-Man (2012), Avengers Assemble (2013) and Guardians of the Galaxy (2015). These TV series aren't set in the MCU, but they do acknowledge the existence of the movies.

-> Where DC has their movie and TV universes seperated, Marvel hasn't. All their live action TV serie are set in the MCU. The events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier had heavy influences on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for example. But will there be a chance we get to see Daredevil with the Avengers? Doesn't look like it now but who knows, I certainly hope so!
-> The MCU is produced by Marvel Studios, but Marvel doesn't own the rights to all their superheroes. The rights to the characters of the X-Men and Fantastic Four comics are in the hands of 20th Century Fox. This is why we will never see Wolverine fight with the Avengers sadly. The rights to Spider-Man were in the hands of Sony, but Sony and Marvel reached an agreement last year that Spidey could join the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, and they will together produce the new Spider-Man movie Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

So now you know everything about both sides, let's make it a fight: Marvel vs DC. Who do you think would win? I can honestly say I'm more a Marvel girl, although the Dark Knight triology is one of the best triologies ever created. I have more faith in Marvel then in DC these days, but that doesn't mean I don't want the DCEU to be as amazing as the MCU. I think critics are being a bit to harsh on DC. I too thought Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad weren't perfect, but they weren't all bad. DC has a tough job winning critics back I think and they'll need several outstanding movies to do that. Marvel has already won critics over, but there bar has now been set pretty high, so I hope they can keep up with all our expectations.
Marvel vs DC? Marvel would win that fight for me now, but let's hope DC can make that even.
