February reviews - Black Panther, Fifty Shades and more
Hey everybody,
The Oscars are almost, almost here. March 4 is going to be an exciting day for Hollywood and I have actually no clue which movie is going to win. It can go almost any direction. But before the Best Picture Oscar is going to be awarded, I am here to look back at the past month. Here are my reviews of the new addition to the MCU, the final movie (finally!) in the Fifty Shades triology and more ofcourse!
The Post (★★★★☆)
Okay let me see if I know how to make a great movie: what if I take Tom Hanks (a living legend) and Meryl Streep (another living legend), who surprisingly never worked with each other before. Okay, now I give them a solid script and as the final touch I'll put Steven Spielberg behind the camera then he is definitely able to make something great out of it. Guess what? It worked like hell, because The Post is just a great solid movie that defenitely deserves a watch.
Black Panther (★★★★☆)
Marvel has the ultimate ability to give every new MCU movie its own unique tone and identity. They have again done this amazingly with Black Panther. The culture of Wakanda depicted in this movie amazed me. The music and the setting are going to give you goosebumps, while you enjoy yourself watching a bold and thought-provoking story. But don't let the political issues distract you from the awesome fight scenes and amazing performances in this movie. I have already said it so many times: 'Marvel, ye has done it again!'
Fifty Shades Freed (★☆☆☆☆)
I don't know where to start here. I think this whole franchise went wrong over the fact that they've created uncharismatic characters who have to work with a terrible plot. A plot which has created one of the most unlikely romances in the history of film, because there is so much wrong with the relationship between Ana and Christian I don't know where to begin. I am glad that this triology is finally over.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (★★★★★)
This movie was able to hit all the right notes. It was emotional, funny and shocking at the same time. Three Billboards is filled with amazing performances by Woody Harrelson and Frances McDormand, but the stand-out performance for me was given by Sam Rockwell. Her character was my favorite part of the movie. I think this movie has by far the biggest chance of winning the Oscar for Best Picture this Sunday.
Game Night (★★★☆☆)
The concept for this movie is actually really smart and funny, but the movie is only half of what it could have been. Yes, the movie has some funny moment, but overall most of the jokes fall kinda flat. The best part of this movie is the creepy neighbour Gary, who made me uncomfortable just by looking at him.
So February was a pretty busy month for me as you can see. Last week I spent three nights on a row in the theatre. Now I still haven't seen The Shape of Water, so I really hope that I can see it this March. We are slowly moving towards more blockbusters, because the Oscar season is over and this may sound weird, but summer movie season is coming. This month will mark the release of Red Sparrow, Tomb Raider, A Wrinkle in Time, Pacific Rim: Uprising and Ready Player One. So yeah, this is hopefully going to be an awesome month.
See you next month!
