January reviews - Maze Runner and All the Money in the World
Hey everybody,
2018 has officially started and Hollywood is slowly preparing for the Oscars. So if you are looking for big Hollywood blockbusters, you will not find it for at least a few weeks. Right now, at the end of January, the cinema is the place to go for biopics, thrillers and dramas. Oh and somewhere between all this Oscar 'violence' is the release of the final Maze Runner movie.
All the Money in the World (★★★★☆)
In Dutch we have a saying 'Geld maakt niet gelukkig', which translates to money doesn't make you happy. This saying is once again proven in All the Money in the World. Originally the role of JP Getty was played by Kevin Spacey, but after the scandal around him, he was entirely cut out of the movie and replaced by Christopher Plummer. Now, although Kevin Spacey is a great actor, Christopher Plummer and the rest of the cast shine in their roles in this well executed thriller-drama. You can feel Michelle Williams' character her pain and desperation while she tries to get back her son. A good way to start 2018.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure (★★★☆☆)
It's been a long time since the first installment of the Maze Runner franchise came out, in a period Hollywood was overrun by movie adaptations of young adult novels. We are now four years later and I am glad we are, because this movie feels so much more mature then previous installments. This movie is filled with action, drama and more emotional moments then expected. The main characters have a lot to lose in the finale, which can be felt, so not everyone may make it out alive.
So it's time to close January and to look ahead. In February the next installment in the MCU, Black Panther, will be released, so will the final installment of the Fifty Shades triology. Next to that I will try to see The Post and The Shape of Water in theatres. Who else is excited?
