Ghost in the Shell (EN) Review
Hey everybody,
Note before I begin: I've never seen the Ghost in the Shell anime version and I was not familiair with the story behind it, so I went into this movie all blanco. This means I will not be able to compare the movie to the anime version. I didn't know what to expect seeing this movie, and when the movie was of to a promising start showing of it's potential I'd hoped I was save. However, besides the stunning action sequences, the movie failed to keep the pace running. I lost my concentration several times, winning some back during those action scenes. I didn't help that the movie added some scenes which had no influence on the plot, which made it feel very long. I liked the idea behind the movie and the visually stunning world they created sometimes reminded me of Blade Runner (1982). They took too much time showing of the effort they put in creating this world, maybe they should have spent that time in developing a better story.
At last I want to adress the 'whitewashing' in this movie. Scarlet Johansson does a great job as Major and she isn't the only white character cast in an Asian role in this movie. I wasn't extremely annoyed by this but I just hope that Hollywood in the future is willing to risk casting a lesser known, but more origin accurate actor.
