Need to know: Infinity Stones
Hey everybody,
It's a hard job to keep track of all the events and things happening in the now fourteen MCU movies. The universe has grown rather large and is pretty complex. Although each movie stands alone, Marvel has been working to set up a fight against Thanos in the third Avengers movie Avengers: Infinity War (2018). He already appeared in the end credit scene of The Avengers (2012) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), but featured a more prominent rol in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Thanos has one goal: find all six of the Infinity Stones. But what exactly are Infinity Stones, which Stone is which and where are they now? I'm here to bring some order in the chaos and to update you on the Infinity Stones, their powers, their appaerences in the MCU and their current locations.
Origin
I could come up with an encrible way to tell the origin of the Infinity Stones, but Taneleer Tivan (the Collector) has already done that for me in a scene in Guardians of the Galaxy. I hearby quote:
As The Collector already stated there are six different Infinity Stones: Space, Reality, Mind, Power, Time and Soul. Each of them possesses an immense power. Bring them together in the Infinity Gauntlet and you'll become the most powerful being in the universe.
Space Stone
You might not know this stone by this name but only by the name of its containment unit: the Tesseract. This stone possesses the power to open portals into space. It's probably the most featured Infinity Stone in the entire MCU. It's first appaerence came in the end credit scene from Thor (2011) when Nick Fury consulted dr. Erik Selvig about it's power and we discover that Loki is looking for it. We learned more of it's origin in Captain America; the First Avenger (2012). The Tesseract then appeared, most prominently, in The Avengers (2012). Loki made a deal with Thanos, he would bring him the Tesseract in exchange for an army. He used the Tesseract to open a portal into space and to bring his Chitauri army to Earth. He never got the change to deliver the Space Stone to Thanos and the Tesseract was brought to Asgard where it is currently under the protection of Heimdall.
Reality Stone
This stone may not have the form of a stone, but certainly is one. This liquid stone possesses the power to change the very fabric of reality and physics. The Reality Stone or Aether played a big role in the second standalone Thor movie Thor: the Dark World (2013). Malekith the Dark Elf uses it's power during the Convergence. In the end credit scene of this movie we see Lady Sif and Volstagg bringing the Reality Stone to the Collector, for safekeeping, stating: 'It's not safe to keep two Infinity Stones so close together'. It's the first time someone in the MCU used the words Infinity Stone. The Reality Stone is currently held in the Collector's Museum on Knowhere.
Power Stone
The Power Stone was locked away safely in its containment unit, the Orb, on a deserted planet, when Star-Lord himself 'danced' into it barely two minutes into Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). It was the time when Thanos still let others do his work for him, because this time it was Ronan who had to retrieve an Infinity Stone for him. This stone possesses the power to destroy entire planets and can grant its owner encrible power. Ronan betrayed Thanos for this power and wanted to use it to destroy Xandar. He was defeated by the Guardians of the Galaxy. They handed the Power Stone over to the Nova Corps on Xandar to be locked away safely.
Mind Stone
Thanos did not only give Loki an army, but also trusted him with the power of another Infinity Stone. Loki's Scepter was the containment unit of the Mind Stone, which he used to mind control both dr. Selvig and Hawkeye. After the events of The Avengers the Scepter fell into the hands of HYDRA. Baron von Strucker started experimenting with it's power and gave normal humans in the process enhancements. The only two that survived his experiments were Wanda 'Scarlet Witch' Maximoff and her brother Pietro 'Quicksilver' Maximoff. The Avengers retrieved the Scepter at the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Tony Stark used it's power to create Ultron. Who stole the Scepter and used the Mind Stone and the stolen virbranium to build a powerful new body known as the Vision with the Stone embedded in it's skul. It was Thor who granted life to the Vision. Vision, now a member of the Avengers, is the current owner of the Mind Stone.
Time Stone
I don't want to brag, but during my first viewing of Doctor Strange (2016) I thought by myself: there's an awful lot of mentioning of Time, could this have anything to do with the Time Stone? I was pretty happy when I turned out to be correct.
The Time Stone is the power source for the Eye of Agamotto and possesses the power to manipulate time. It was Doctor Strange himself who experimented with it's powers. In the end he used it to defeat Kaecilius and Dormammu. Wong didn't find it very wise that Strange would go wandering around wearing an Infinity Stone, so the Eye of Agamotto is now kept safe in Kamar-Taj.
Soul Stone
The Soul Stone will be the last of the Infinity Stones to make an appearance. James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (April 27), has said that Guardians 2 won't set up Avengers: Infinity War so the Soul Stone is most likely to appaer in Thor: Ragnarök (November 2). None of this has been confirmed yet, so pay close attention while watching both Guardians 2 and Ragnarok. Who knows it might even show up in Spider-Man Homecoming (July 6).
All the other stones don't have the same color as their comic book versions, but the only color left from the original six colors that has not yet been used is orange. The Soul Stone will thus be an orange stone, so watch closely for anything orange featured in these next three movies.
I hope you're updated well enough, if you have any questions left please let me know in the comments. I had encrible fun writing and constructing this piece and I can't wait for all the pieces to come together in Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
