The Dark Tower (EN) Review

Hey everybody,

With the release of yet another book-to-movie adaptation, brings back the usual question: 'Which of the two should be watched/read first?' Opinions on the matter differ very much. Reading a book you probably create a vision in your head about the characters and setting. Seeing the movie can be disappointing when it isn't the way you imagined it, or pleasing when it's better then the way you imagined it. They're many examples of great adaptations like the Harry Potter franchise or The Lord of the Rings Triology, but also many that failed to deliver. Movies often differ from the books, which can anger fans immensely. I could go on and on about this matter for hours but it's probably better to get back to the subject that matter today: the release of The Dark Tower based on the popular book series by Stephen King. Note: I haven't read the books.
The Dark Tower has a relatively short runtime (1h 35 min) and they aren't wasting a second of this movie. They throw you right into the action from the moment it starts. This is a positive thing, because there isn't a dull moment. However, this also makes the movie feel a bit too simplistic. Stephen King has undoubtely created a whole universe with his books, so why not give audiences the chance to explore that world? I wish this movie would've used just a little bit more time to show us this world and develop these characters a bit better. Who are these people? There must be a whole mythology built around them. Unfortunenately I got to see to little of that.
